Sometimes there are sounds that inspire you, that transform your playing, your musical sensibility and your creativity as a guitarist and musician. This is the case of the Strymon Cloudburst which produces magnificent "ambient" reverbs and ultra immersive soundscapes. As we will see, it's simple: there is nothing equivalent to the Cloudburst on the market.
As always, the Californian brand remains faithful to its anodized aluminum case. But, big news, the pedal is much more compact and benefits from a completely redesigned interface with ultra-complete connectivity. Inside, we stay on made in USA with quality PCBs, selected components and colossal computing power.
In terms of controls, goodbye to hidden secondary functions, we focus on efficiency and simplicity. A Decay control to adjust the length of the reverb. This one is very specific as it is versatile. A few degrees are enough to go from a small room to a veritable wall of ultra-massive sound. Pre-Delay lets you adjust the trigger time of the effect, Tone controls the high frequencies, and Mod lets you adjust the amount of modulation on the various delay lines that make up the effect. Importantly, this control acts on the depth until 12:00 and on the speed of the effect from 12:00 to the maximum. Mix controls the wet/dry mix and allows you to change the intensity of the effect.
Finally, Ensemble is the “magic” control of the Cloud Burst. This allows you to generate Synth type pads up to huge walls of harmonics. These harmonics are dynamically generated by analyzing 48 different frequency ranges. Ensemble doesn't just analyze pitch variations like most effects processors do. Ensemble generates complex harmonic content based on your playing, how you attack the strings, your pickups, your guitar controls, the other effects in the chain etc… imagine an organic and intelligent pitch shifter.
With the Cloudburst you have an infinity of reverbs available within this small box. You can get the usual Room and Hall, for guitarists looking for a reverb that slightly spatializes their sound.
By activating the Modulation function, you get a color that only Strymon offers on the market. It's beautiful, it's lush, deep, enveloping. You can spend hours dropping a few chords and listening to what Cloudburst creates for you.
With a more advanced Decay and Mix, we switch to the typical LA Studio sounds of the 80s and 90s. The pedal is capable of recreating legendary sounds heard on hundreds of albums with disconcerting ease.
With the Ensemble mode, the Cloudburst becomes a wall of sound capable of producing immense pads of a complexity never seen before for an effect pedal. You can create rich, near-limitless soundscapes. With maximum Decay you can generate forward loops of up to 50 seconds. imagine all the delay lines modulating at the same time. What rendering!
Wait, that's not all! The Cloudburst benefits from 2 additional modes of use. When paired with a MiniSwitch or MultiSwitch Plus, the Cloudburst gives you access to Infinite and Freeze modes that allow you to add unique sonic layers.
- FREEZE: Play a note or chord, the Cloudburst will sustain your entire processed sound (including Ensemble) indefinitely. You turn your reverb into a veritable “static cloud” to play on.
- INFINITE: Use Infinite Sustain to let your reverb tracks last as long as you want, with newly played notes added to existing tracks. Your reverb continues to grow and evolve endlessly.
Finally, the pedal is full Stereo, Midi (300 presets), has a kill dry function, a Class A JFET input stage, an input for an expression pedal and a USB port -C to update the bike. They are strong these Californians, very strong!
